One of the world’s most famous prehistoric monuments, Stonehenge has been the subject of many theories about its origin, with its construction attributed to the Druids, Romans, Danes, or to Merlin from Arthurian legend. Scholars believe it was a center for religious or healing rituals. Stonehenge was built in several stages, starting with an early henge monument around 5,000 years ago, and followed by the erection of a unique stone circle in the late Neolithic period around 2500 BC.
