Built in the Second Century AD under the Emperor Hadrian, the 73-mile-long Hadrian’s Wall was built across northern England to mark and defend Britain’s northern border and the northwest border of the Roman Empire. Later abandoned as the empire crumbled, parts of the wall were repurposed for the construction of English forts and churches.
